Know the Numbers
In 2007, Ministry of Women and Child Development (MWCD) India conducted a study covering 13 states with the sample size of 12,446 children and found that:
1. 53.22% of children in India are sexually assaulted 2. Girls and boys from all background are sexually assaulted 3. Children of age 3 – 18 are sexually abused and the age group of 5-12 years reported higher levels of abuse 4. In 50% of the cases the sex offenders are someone that child already knows and trusts
In 2006, Tulir, NGO in Chennai conducted a study among 2211 school going children in Chennai and found out that:
1. 48% of children in India are sexually assaulted 2. 48% of boys reported having been abused 3. The prevalence rate among girls was 39% 4. 15% of both boys and girls had been severely abused
In 2001, Save the Children, Sweden conducted a study and found that:
1. 15% of both boys and girls had been severely abused 2. 68% had faced physical abuse 3. 46.6% faced severe abuse leading to injuries 4. 32.2% had their private parts touched by the abuser 5. 20% were forced to have sexual intercourse
